Constance Wu looked starstruck from the off. Only seemed to find her feet in last 15 minutes of the film. Ali Wong would have done a better job. Entertaining to a point, as others have said, the film didn't go anywhere and the plot/writing was thin. The whole set up with the journalist didn't work and added nothing to the story.
Good film, well directed and well acted. The script was average though, imo. I felt bored in the last third of the film and I didn't care much about what happens to these girls. But I have to say, Lily Reinhart is amazingly sexy, a true eye-candy.It's a film about female empowerment in a world run by men - it's based on a true story - it's about friendship somewhat similar to beaches - it's about love it about trust it's about knowing and not knowing who has your back.
I was originally attracted to this film for its star-studded cast, and they do not disappoint!!! The energy and connection between the actors, including JLo, Constance Wu, Cardi B, Lizzo, and more, is palpable! The story line is based on true life events and is deeply disturbing but the cast is so charismatic that they make it lovable. I would recommend this film for anyone looking for a feel-good female empowerment film.
Hustlers is very much Goodfellas with strippers, but that's not a criticism necessarily, but more of just a comment on the structure and tone of the story. When following main characters that are criminals, more often than not the film shows the rise and fall, and Hustlers is no different as the rise is far more captivating than the latter. I haven't seen a ton of Jennifer Lopez performances, but Hustlers is far and away the best she's ever been. The sequence on the pole that everyone is talking about just goes to show you how impressive she can be as a presence without saying many lines.
I really enjoyed this movie - Jennifer Lopez is sensational as Ramona. Loved Constance Wu as destiny and it has an overall strong cast. Really not sure why Cardi B Is even in it or gets a name credit to the title - she's in it for like 5 seconds and you can't make out what she says Anyways - but apart from that - it's a fantastic movie.
Hustlers stars Constance Wu, who you may remember from Crazy Rich Asians, as a new recruit in a high-end strip club in New York City. Early on, a title card shows us that the year is 2007, which made me think, “that’s an interesting time to set a movie,” until I realized that a large part of the club’s clientele was made up of predatory Wall Street types, and I said to myself, “uh oh, this could get bad.” Wu is taken under the wing of the club’s biggest draw, Ramona, played by Jennifer Lopez, who shows her how to use the men’s compulsion to abuse and dominate to extract more and more money from them, and for a time, they’re riding high. Then, of course, 2008 hits, every market everywhere crashes, the club loses most of its business, and the women hit very hard times for a few years. Then, around 2011, Wu runs into Ramona again and discovers she’s found a way to get back to living in luxury, albeit this time by rather more criminal means.
If you are a big Jennifer Lopez fan who sees every movie she's in, this is a movie that you'll want to see. If you like movies in which the majority of the scenes are set in strip clubs, this is your kind of movie. If you like movies about shallow, unlikable characters who spend most of their time at work suggestively posing and dancing for customers and most of their time away from work drinking, partying, and laughing about the money they've stolen, by all means go see this movie. Otherwise, don't waste your time.
Had it's funny moments, Cardi B was fun and refreshing, but honestly the only person actually "acting" in this move was Constance Wu. There should have been more pole dancing and fun... The movie tries to make it look like the club clients were bad men, but they didn't do a good job at showing that so you just end up feeling bad for all these men being targeted and drugged for money by women who felt the world owed them something one way or another. I do not in any way feel this movie was empowering to women other than shining a humanizing light on sex workers to help destigmatize the profession which is great. J-Lo's single tear crying scenes weren't moving at all, and her character as well as the other characters were never fully explored in depth so somehow the entire movie seemed shallow.
Constance Wu impressed me... it took me a few minutes to realize it was her. JLo has given a great performance. The script was mostly good, though it did drag occasionally, but I may feel differently after another viewing when it comes to video. There were some really clever film making techniques that drive home the fact that this was based on a true story. I think it's pretty good. I suspect it'll be in contention, come award season.
The Hustle Stars Josephine an elegant, sophisticated con artist who swindles rich men in the french town and the rebel Wilson the social awkward penny who makes her way to the town to do her part of scamming. But Josephine is no where interested to get interfered with her plans. However Wilson disturbs the Josephine and she founds it hard to remove Wilson from her way. In this regard, Josephine treats her and teaches Wilson some of her tricks and methods for conning the rich man. How the Hustle team do as Hustlers forms part of the story. Even though the movie is a one and half hour long, it feels bit drag and the audience feel bored. The movie is watchable as a weekend fun.
I had low expectations for this movie and it didn't even meet those. The acting was so forced and unnatural, even awkward at times. A very low budget production. This movie should have been a netflix original.People overhyped this movie because of the big names in it but even that couldn't save it. Acting, casting choice and plot were all mediocre.
While the whole cast is amazing, this is Jennifer Lopez's chef d'oeuvre. Her performance is the best we've seen her since Selena and Out Of Sight, possibly even better than those two movies. A strong contender for this awards season. Definitely deserves at least an Oscar nomination, or a Golden Globe win. Without a doubt, one of the best movies of the year.
