So much effort and money spent on a movie that has so little soul. The lesson: you can look like a Bhansali movie but you also need to evoke the feel ! Kalank begins with promise even while it indicates very early that aunthenticity is not high on the agenda. The topography goes from mountain to valley to desert and lake ! Characters are dressed beautifully and they mouth the Urdu laces dialogues as they can but they rarely connect and touch you. So okay it is a love story and little more but at close to three hours and a massive ensemble cast to manage,it falls under the weight of it's grandiosity. The only people who rise above the mediocrity are Varun in a searing intense performance( he totally rocks the kajal look ) and the ever reliable Alia . Their moments together and apart make it watchable. Kunal Kemmu springs a nice surprise as a man who goes from grey to black with ease. The others have their moments but are cardboard cutouts who don't feel real. The music is lovely, the arts beautiful ,the costumes gorgeous. Agar kuch shifdat aur mehnat kat lete toh itni tabaahi na Hoti!

I was about to watch this movie first day first show and for some reason I couldn't . By next day it was hammered by our Pseudo intellectual Critics so much that whoever said otherwise everyone labeled it as paid reviws. After long really beautiful epic love story is shown on equally beautiful canvas . A epic love story that's takes you with them in their love journey with beautiful rhythmic poetic dialogues and equally enchanting canvas. They hammered it for it's rhythmic dailogues seriously a love story with Muslim backdrop will not even have shayrana andaaz. Mirza Galib poetry used to flows in viens of mostly everyone during that era specially in Punjab ..One thing disappointing is screenplay which doesn't flow smoothly ..But this is minor crack in otherwise Masterpiece it's beautiful enchanting experience for any die hard romantic..Varun Madhuri acting so top level ...Every nuance of their character so we'll depicted by them .. Certainly best performance of Varun ...Rest Alia Kunal Adi all gave such good performance...I am glad I watched this on big screen ..I realized one thing Indian critics are not to be trusted just like politician ..

KALANK is the story of lovers not destined to be together. The year is 1945. Satya Chaudhry (Sonakshi Sinha), wife of Dev Chaudhry (Aditya Roy Kapur) is diagnosed with cancer and she is told that she has just a year or maximum two years to live. Realizing that Dev will be shattered after her demise, she decides to find a second wife for him. Her search takes her to Rajputana, Rajasthan where Roop (Alia Bhatt) resides. The families of Roop and Satya go back a long way. Roop at first rejects Satya’s offer but upon knowing her medical condition, she agrees. However, she has a condition – Dev will have to marry her first and only then she’ll move into the house of the Chaudhrys. Satya, Dev and Dev’s father Balraj (Sanjay Dutt) agree. Dev and Roop get married and the former makes it clear to the latter that this will be a marriage of convenience. After marriage, Roop moves to Husnabad near Lahore where the Chaudharys reside. At first she feels lonely but then gets curious by the voice of Bahaar Begum (Madhuri Dixit). She decides to learn music under her tutelage. Satya and others at first are aghast on hearing this decision since Bahaar runs a brothel and that too in the infamous part of the city called Heera Mandi. Roop protests and the Chaudharys give in. Bahaar meanwhile is impressed by Roop and decides to teach her singing. At Heera Mandi, Roop bumps into the flirtatious Zafar (Varun Dhawan). Both get attracted to each other. Zafar is a blacksmith and works for Abdul (Kunal Kemmu) and the latter has a communal mindset. He’s also against Dev’s newspaper Daily Times that promotes the idea of one nation theory, rejects the notion of Partition and recommends industrialization even at the cost of job loss of blacksmiths. Bahaar senses that Roop is getting attracted to Zafar and she gets horrified. After all, she knows that Zafar has ulterior motives behind romancing Roop and it get can lead to disastrous consequences. What happens next forms the rest of the film.

For me the main fact for a movie is the script. And these movie for script lover would be a bliss, the dialogues the used were immense but the voice strength over that dialogues were just wow. For me these was just unexpected to see such a great film with such a bad visuals and direction. If the same was created by sanjay leela bhansali, it would reach its proper heights !!

In "Kalank," a lavish Bollywood melodrama, people talk in mysterious ways. "Some relationships are like debt," the hero says, gazing into the heroine's dark eyes "They cannot be redeemed. They must be repaid." So brava to the heroine, Roop (Alia Bhatt), who finally gets around to asking him, "Why can you never speak plainly?"

The story deals with the illegal relationship of a woman who is already married with a person outside her marriage which was narrated as happened before independence of India and the region of present Pakistan. The dialogues were best and also the cinematography was good. The director has a good command over the subject which can be understood form the taking of the movie. However the story is well within the expectations of the audience and not much suspense or thriller can be expected. This is not at all a boring movie. it did have some fun or drama people wanted and audience love it.

Story begins with narrating the life of people and blacksmiths before India got its independence as a combined nation in the region of Pakistan. Story progresses showing life style of blacksmiths and the life before independence with backdrop as the love story between the wife and the lover. Performance from Alia Bhatt shows vulnerability along with strong endeavor. This is a family romantic drama with a plot of loving a person out of marriage. Definitely watchable ..

The movie is top notch from start to finish. It's intense, emotion provoking and gripping from start to finish. A phenomenal movie on the level of classics like Devdas, but with a different tone and flavor. All 6 actors have given their best performances. The cinematography and sets are out of this world - worth seeing it alone for those 2 things. The dialogues were some of the best I've ever heard and the costumes and visual details make you want to watch it again and again. The story was very unique and very good, secrets continue to unfold throughout the movie and best of all, the climax and ending were not predictable.

This movie is about the illegitimate love and relationship of a woman with a third man after getting married. The story or the plot for this kind of film is not new for the audience. The story also describes about the life of the blacksmiths in husnabad in the pre-independence era which is integral part of pakistan at present. The hero runs a daily news paper in the town. And after getting married with roop, the love story between roop and zafar fills in the story. The reactions and the relationship and the feelings of the characters are well addressed in the movie - it is a one time watch for sure

Too slow a movie to be withstood for good 150 minutes. The only thing which is good in the movie is Varun and Alia only. The only thing that stood out was perfection in acting else it is a simple story.Everything goes as expected no suspense or surprise really very disappointed..

Without giving any spoliers, the movie starts slow, then in middle remains slow and end in just like that. That is what you will feel by watching kalank. The acting of most of the cast is average at the best. The stand out of cast is alia bhatt, she standout of cast by not only by her look, by just her presence on screen and mostly by her mesmerizing acting. The direction is not good, same goes for the story, but visuals were good.

Disappointment is the one word that suits this movie best. Kalank is a visual spectacle - the grand sets are nicely setup. But it is a typical Bollywood movie which fails to deliver due to lack of new story and screenplay. The story line is slow, boring to watch and is extremely predictable. As predicted, actors did a wonderful job but all the multi starrer hype didn't live upto the expectations. Alia and Varun did a fantastic job with their parts and so did Sanjay Dutt. But the negative point about the movie is that there is no character development, same old melodrama. In terms of direction - the movie completely fails to deliver. It's just a waste of star talent.

Kalank is a multi-starrer romantic movie which everyone can watch atleast for one time. Both Varun Dhawan and alia Bhatt are paired perfectly and look actors playing their part in the movie. Chemistry and bonding between both of them is very nice and lovely to watch. Sanjay Dutt is playing an important character in the movie and Sonakshi-Aditya both have done a very good job. The screenplay and direction of the movie is very nice as always in dharma productions. Songs of the movie makes the movie look good. First class is definitely the party song of the year. Alia's dance was graceful compared to Madhuri Dixit even though she's not a trained dancer. Overall kalank is a good movie to watch with family and friends !!

A complex love story set during India’s Partition era, where the young Roop (Alia Bhatt) is torn between respect for husband Dev (Aditya Roy Kapur) and her newfound love for Zafar (Varun Dhawan). While their back stories and heart-breaking love saga unfolds, the history of India takes an epic turn, from where there is no coming back. Music is soothing and songs are awesome. Its a must watch for die hard romantics ...

If you love romantic movies then Kalank is the movie to watch. After seeing the trailer I was too excited and was counting the days to go watch it.Chemistry between Alia and Varun was astonishing -the way he looks at her and both of their acting need to be praised as they are still learning .Each and every actor performed really well to create this epic love story. Also, all the songs were beautiful pictured and best ones this year most likely. I have been seeing a lot of people criticizing Alia’s dance but no one thinks about the fact that Madhuri is trained whereas Alia isn’t and still did ghar more pardesiya really well. Please encourage young talents like Alia and Varun as they have just started. When I first heard tabaah ho gaye, I felt like something was missing, probably because of the fast choreography for slow tune.In the cinema i could fully correlate with the movie and I love that song.Giving young actors chance to prove themselves will help them to be in limelight as each generation actors were given importance. As time goes by, new actors come and that’s how it is. By the time you leave the theatre, you will have some type of desire to seek love and happiness.Just wait for your story ..

Liked the story very much but acting is very poor. I think that the actors have not given much thought to the roles but overall it is a good experience and worth my ticket money. Varun Dhawan has done a great job as always - he impressed me a lot. Alia Bhatt was also good but not her best compared to her previous movies. Modhuri was totally confused and seems lost in her role

It was a typical Karan Johar movie...Nothing good in it.....All it has is just visuals and big names ....just the visuals were great ....the story revolves about two lovers who are never united as always in karan johars movies....it was a total mess...it had big names but story was not at all good & not what you expect with such good actors.....Alia was a huge disappointment and after a long time there was too much of promotion and marketing...but movie was disaster ...it was like a kalank on varum and alia's career and other actors tooo...

This movie brings nothing new to the table apart from the great sets and costumes. Typical Hindu-Muslim story which I guess everyone is probably sick of now. Can't the writers come with something original or innovative, Movie is very predictable and has very little to offer. What a waste of talent of the star power in this movie.

It was a good movie but it has a routine story nothing exciting. The lead actors are the amazing in the movie. The story is routine and we have seen it many times but the the lead cast manages the story well so we don't feel bored when watching. The direction is average and the screen play is good. The movie is good but not great as expected.

This is such a nice movie .. even though it does feel dragged at times - doesn't fail to entertain you nevertheless. Alia looks very sweet in her role. Varun has given a power packed performance. Madhuri looks beautiful and her charm hasn't reduced one single bit .. All other actors have also played their roles well. I'd recommend watching this movie with family & friends ..

It's an amazing movie with a proper mixture of romance, drama, music. Acting, direction is perfect but the movie is elongated likewise, at the moment movie becomes boring . Music was so perfect and very pleasant. Everytime Sanjay dutt enters in movie, audience get much focused because of Sanjay dutt looks in movie. I suggest it's a must watch movie with family and friends.

A grandure of sets set in 1946,heavyweight names in starcast gets crusified with loose screenplay and storyline. Plastic emotions with no joy in partition background could not sail the ship. Story revolves around centre character of Roop played by Alia Bhaat who agrees to marry Dev Chowdhury played by Aditya Roy Kapoor to be his second wife and matchmaker is Dev's first wife Satya portraited by Sonakshi Sinha. Satya is diagonised with blood cancer and it's her last wish to see her husband to get married again. Roop on the other hand picks up the deal being adamant and indigent in her fate and father to keep her responsibilities towards her younger sisters' marriage (as this deal came with heavy toll of money from Satya) Whole story is based in Husnabad where Dev Choudhury along with his father Baldev Choudhury(Sanjay Duty) runs a newspaper called Daily Times.

A typical Bollywood film to appeal to global audience. This film is the same old "religion" vs "humanity" , where Zafar is of other religion. My question is why cant Zafar denounce his religion for his loved one? And there is no character development for Zafar. Direction wise the movie is really bad, probably one of the worst direction of all time.No plot.No character Development. Only Melodrama. Director is wannabe SanjayLeela Bansali. Music is forgettable and Pritam's worst movie as music director. Like other review says, the film is extremely boring.
