Akshay posted a review for Laxmii (2020) in Movies
Produced by Fox Star Studios, Tushar Entertainment House, Shabinaa Entertainment, LAXMII BOMB is a remake of the Tamil Blockbuster “Kanchana” that set the cash registers overflowing across Tamil Nadu. The film is written and directed by Lawrence Raghavendra. While a few “PANdits” are still grappling with the last few useless reasons to pinpoint the success of the original, the decision of the director to remake this film in Bollywood further challenges these PANdits. Add to it the casting of Akshay Kumar, who inarguably is the biggest commercial hero of Bollywood to the mix, makes the cause even more deafening. Despite being adapted to suit the Bollywood audience the story of the film is as dumb as the original and the tailored screenplay reeks of audacious stupidity. It is not that Bollywood is numb to such dumb scripts; it has its own share of duffs with Akshay Kumar lording over a few. Lawrence adds to the menu by weaving a new genre “horror comedy” that has been done to death in Kollywood. Akhay Kumar looks jaded in this unconvincing script. Kiara Advani is OK on her own but her pairing with Akshay Kumar delivers a bland chemistry. The rest are as loud as the director wants them to be. Cinematographer Vetri adds lots of glitz and colour to the scenes. Amar Mohile’s back ground score is effective. Rajesh Pandey’s editing it taut. Dialogues are over the top while the direction is kitschy. LAXMII BOMB is a horror-comedy that has “horrific” comedy and “comical” horror.

Akshay posted a review for Ludo (2020) in Movies
Ludo is a really good movie. It's beautifully interwoven web of comedy of errors. It has a stellar starcast with AB jnr, Rajkumar Rao, Aditya Roy Kapoor Pankaj Tripathi and a really good support cast. But at the core of Ludo is all heart. Every story is wonderful in its own sense. The humor is at times subtle, at times laugh-out-loud and at times at the most unexpected junctures. Anurag Basu is back at it where he replaces the background narration with background music which sets the tone and tempo of each scene. Basu also manages to get his actors to act without saying much which is a rare feat. Every single actor has performed almost flawlessly. I would have liked it if all the character back stories were explored as opposed to just ARK's story. Wonderful, emotional and funny movie with great background score and amazing acting. Just don't go looking for logic.

Akshay posted a review for Chhalaang (2020) in Movies
A very generic sports drama. Since it comes from the director-actor duo of very high repute who have given us some superbly crafted stories (Aligarh, Shahid, Omerta), its all the more disappointing. The movie has too many things on its mind. Wants to teach us token feminism, wants to make comment about moral policing and also wants to sneak in the message about importance of sports. But it does none of these in a coherent manner. Protagonist is a quitter, leads romeo squad, doesn't appreciate his role as PTI teacher...in short, there is nothing likeable about him. But the heroine (a feminist, no less) loses her heart to him in precisely 2 scenes and after one daaru party. First half is actually a drag as the conflict is set for a sports competition (premise is cringeworthy, to say the least). Second half focuses on extremely silly training techniques to beat up the kids into a team of sorts. The final contest is quite lame and extremely predictable, including an injured athlete coming back and winning the championship. The performances, on the other hand, are quite good. Rajkumar is in good form, so is Zeeshan. Nusrat Bharucha is a big miscast. Her haryanvi act is inconsistent. Kids do a better job and are endearing. Overall, the only reason to sit through this movie was that it was the most kid friendly movie among the limited options available.

Akshay posted a review for Thappad in Movies
I’m going with four out of five for Thappad. It’s a hard subject to pull off, but Anubhav Sinha achieves it with first-rate storytelling. The best films inspire dialogue, they set you thinking; they can even lead to change. This one made me uncomfortable; it made me question myself and I think it will make you too. It’s essential viewing.
