A soon as you let go of the fact that this version is NOT going to be exactly like the 1998 animated film, you’ll appreciate it for what it is: Heartwarming and action-packed while effectively delivering the messages of female empowerment and being true to yourself. Plus, an ALL-ASIAN cast!! This is one of the rare times I’ve agreed with the critics. I didn’t realize how good the live-action version was until the second time I watched it as a completely stand-alone film and could appreciate the necessity of some storyline changes (e.g. how Mulan chooses to reveal herself). In fact, my whole family enjoyed it very much despite expecting it to be terrible based on reviews. If you’re adamant on watching a shot-for-shot of the animated version complete with catchy songs and a talking dragon, you probably won’t like this version. If you have an open mind and genuinely enjoy entertaining films with beautiful cinematography and a talented cast, you’ll probably like it. You’ll appreciate it even more when you notice the little tidbits they’ve incorporated from the animated version. The absence of singing and cutesy sidekicks actually allows the film’s message to be taken more seriously.
