Harbhajan posted a review for Aiyaary in Movies
Marking his second collaboration with Shah and Bajpai and third one with Kher, as a director Pandey chooses a very ingenious yet prevalent and appropriate theme for his film 'Aiyaari'. If there are two elements of this file that will literally move you out of your wits, it is Bajpai's impeccable acting and the makeup used to disguise both Bajpai and Malhotra. Although a film lacking in totality in comparison to Pandey's debut, 'A Wednesday' which is well...A movie with little or no mistakes at all such flawless was this work with an elite cast of 2 of the best actors of Bollywood (Shah and Kher), 'Aiyaari' still succeeds to be a smart production heavily influenced by the ways of the West. Bajpai's incredible performance in this film is also furthered by his accent which he marvelously displayed aligned with his strict yet impressive persona characterised by even his style of walking which could be clearly sighted when he finally goes to meet Baburam(Shah). Kher and Shah, the veterans have delivered an accepting performance with their minor roles. Kumud Mishra a.k.a Gurinder Singh played a smart antagonist prone to the fears of a senior and defeat with appropriate reactions. His performance was praiseworthy apart from that one scene where his reaction involved throwing his arms downward after he hears an undesirable news on phone. The music keeps the tempo of the action thriller. Some insights to the film which I felt are vital are as follows. The particular part where Malhotra a.k.a Bakshi decides to toss his coin in order to aid him in making a decision takes place twice in the film, the latter of which also involves an Indian ten rupee coin as in the former case. But Bakshi is obviously expected to carry currency of the nation he was then residing in and hence a coin of London would be more appropriate unless of course it was revealed that that particular Indian ten rupee has a special significance. Also, Bajpayee a.k.a Abhay being a true spirited and morally rational and samaritan, wouldn't risk the lives of innocents for an assassination attempt on anyone and hence, the fact that he didn't care to ensure so while negotiating the deal with Hussain a.k.a Mukesh Kapoor disheartened me. The opening scene was a boosting one and a rather cheer-deserving one cleanly presented by Bajpayee with his incredibly smart demeanour. I give this film a 3.5/5.
Harbhajan posted a review for Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety in Movies
The movie is supposed to be a mix of romance, comedy and frendship... unfortunately the mix is so bland that the film falls flat and barring a few little sparks there is nothing new or interesting to keep the story fresh, interesting and ... yes somewhat logical (I guess that’s too much to ask for these days!!). I mean, the girl in the movie - Sweety played by Nushrat Bharucha- is made to be the villian without any rhyme or reason and the whole story revolves around this assumption that she is out to destroy the boy i.e. TITU, who she is getting married to and as a result the boy’s friend SONU takes it upon himself to ensure that the marriage gets called off. To ensure this Sonu and Sweety indulge in a game of one upmanship mostly through repeated close ups and strange expressions rather than actually doing something that makes sense. As I said before the movie makes very little effort to show how the girl is the villian she is being made out to be and the audience has to simply get used to the idea that she is bad because she is a girl getting married into a very rich family and therefore obviously has so called “ulterior motives”, irrespective of the fact that the film shows her doing some good things but you see “She is Too Good To Be True” and therefore she must be a fraud. How does that equation work, I leave it for you to decide. The girl or her family’s “ulterior motives” or indecent motivations never come to the fore...I mean, why do I even care! The performances are alright and there are some funny moments but we have seen all this before...remember” Pyaar Ka Panchnama”? I had fair expectations going in but the film overall and then the ending (don’t ask me to give that away) just left me irritated and frustrated...this could have ben much better for sure! At best 2/5.
Harbhajan posted a review for October in Movies
I hardly watch any movies in theaters but this one had something different to offer from others as I saw it's trailer. I was much curious to know about the story of the film as one may scratch some brains after listening it's songs and watching the promo that this movie is all about love, attachments and sufferings. However, ‘October’ was much more than that. I entered the cinema hall before the arrival of most of the audience. Sat comfortably on my seat just waiting for the movie to start. The movie begins with a scene of a metro slowly travelling from an over bridge. ‘Dan’ (Varun Dhavan) is a hotel management trainee who has to complete his internship in a hotel so that he qualifies for his bachelors. He is a careless, lethargic and not so inspired towards work guy, who doesn't have much priorities in life. ‘Shiuli’ (Banit Sandhu) is a management trainee as well. She is more calm, composed and knows how to do her job well. They both share a casual relationship in the movie where some hie, hello types of conversations occur between them. But, here comes the twist. ‘Shiuli’ falls from the third floor while enjoying a party with her colleagues but fortunately survives somehow. After her hospitalization, ‘Dan’, her not so close friend comes everyday to see her. The reason behind his concern for her were those final words spoken by ‘Shiuli’ for ‘Dan’ about his absence from the hotel. “Where is Dan.” The movie portraits a real life human emotions where a person close to you suffers the same. In such instances, most of the people leave your support. But for ‘Dan’, it wasn't the case. He cares for her irrespective of what people say to him. He even compromises his job, family and friends for her. The best thing I like in the movie is ‘Dan’s empathetic attitude towards a girl harldy much known to him. Being called as an immature person, he possesses something in him which others lack completely, ‘Empathy’. While ‘Shiuli’ is bedridden and unconscious, she still knows ‘Dan’s presence around her. She knows how he comes regularly to meet her. How he sleeps on the hospital floor. How he runs constantly for her medical aid. How he supports her mother. This is the real beauty of the movie where a hardly known friend cares for her and an unconscious, bedridden person still knows his presence around her. This touched me. Finally ‘Dan’ realises what life is. He works hard to make a living. He becomes responsible in life. After the movie got over, my eyes got numb. I was just sitting on my seat while seeing people leaving the cinema hall. Some of them were laughing for the heroine being bedridden for the whole movie. But for me, this movie touched my heart. Emotions came out from within as the fear of separation from a close one caught me in its claws. This movie portraits how fragile a life is. Each moment should be cherished as it may be your last
Harbhajan posted a review for Parmanu: The Story of Pokhran in Movies
Paramanu : the story of Pokhran is a good acceptable thriller which tells you the story of India's one of the most initial Nuclear Test conducted by India. Story starts in 1995 where an unsuccessful attempt is made because of lack of interest and focus of politicians; but opportunity knocks on John's door in 1998 where one of chief officer (Bomon Irani) shows interest and willingness in that idea. John is back to work and audience get ready to witness the preparation of testing nuclear weapons. To keep the operation covert is the biggest challenge ahead of the team because there is spy from Pakistan & satellites through which USA is keeping eye. Now to watch how they keep up with the operation going on with avoiding the satellites is the most intriguing and fun part of the movie. You know how it will end but it succeeds in creating that urgency and excitement, especially in the second half. First half has its own unwanted scenes which could have been avoided i.e. John's wife accusing him of being unfaithful and all, which creates unintentional humour in such serious situation. Screenplay is mostly good but it could have been more crispier if some scenes were edited. John Abraham does his best as a patriotic R&D officer, Diana did a faithful job and Boman is amazing as always with other cast. Overall Abhishek Sharma directorial is an entertaining movie providing a glance inone of chapters of Indian history.John and all other producers should be encouraged for choosing such a winner subject.
Harbhajan posted a review for Raid in Movies
This gripping thriller is inspired by the true events of income tax raids conducted by the Indian revenue service in the 1980’s which created a sensation in the political and public scenario at that time. Set in 1981 in Uttar Pradesh, an earnestly honest IT officer Amay Patnaik (Ajay Devgun) gets leads of black money being stocked at the residence of an influential minister Rameshwar Singh aka Tauji (Saurabh Shukla), he raids the big palatial mansion along with his team and fights all odds including political, violent and even emotional barriers in order to extract the ‘hidden treasure’. Ajay Devgun is sincere in his act and looks like he’s carrying forward his Singham & Gangaajal avatar. He looks mature and fits the part convincingly and thankfully does not go over the top. Saurabh Shukla complements Devgun’s Ram with his fantastic portrayal of the Kalyug Ka Ravan. His archetypal killer look and menacing dialogues delivery lends able support in building his villainous image. Full credit to the director for developing these two primary characters very well specially Shukla’s as Devgun’s has some drawbacks. In this Ram v/s Ravan Raid the Supporting cast( mostly Devgun’s IT team and Shukla’s huge joint family) do get sidelined yet some make their presence felt. Amit Sial as the IT officer who undergoes a transformation during the raid acts well. Saanand Verma, Amit Bimrot, Devas Dixit, Sheeba Chadda, Akshay Verma & Gayathri Iyer are passable. It is 86 year old Pushpa Singh who makes her presence felt as Shukla’s Mom whose sharp sarcastic dialogues and inimitable energy makes the leading lady Ileana Dcruz fade in comparison. Poor Dcruz is nothing more than a decorative show piece in this film. The director manages to capture the stereotypical mentality of upper class families in India as depicted during the raid where the women are concerned about their jewellery being seized and the children are overjoyed that they can bunk school during this emergency in the family. Another irritating factor is the repeated stress on giving Devgun an earnest and honest image by portraying him as a true patriot who is an Atheist but worships “Bharat Mata”, who smokes throughout the movie even during the raid but doesn’t get detered by the powerful influence of the minister whose house he’s raiding. Agreed that realistically there may have been an IT officer so righteous and the movie is set in 1981 but it’s hard to digest someone being deliberately infused with such a squeaky clean image in a movie releasing in today’s times. So Devgun as the torch bearer of Orthodox principles is shown strong enough to reject Shukla’s bribes, the violent uproar of Shukla’s brothers and blind followers and even the sexual advances by Shukla’s daughter in law(Sulagna Panigrahi trying hard to look seductive). The director Raj Kumar Gupta has done a good job by trimming the running time and focusing on the main plot which makes the film gripping and engaging. The only distractions are the unnecessary songs ( though well composed) as this could’ve easily been a songless thriller. It’s unfortunate that the director is a victim of Bollywood mandate by adding unnecessary romance & songs. Definitely a one- time watch for viewers looking out for something different from the regular Bollywood fare.
