This movie went more-indepth in their characters, and let the audience live their story. The only thing I would change is how the movie focuses only on a couple specific characters, taking away solos from characters such as Jemima or Jellylorum, but that makes sense, since it is difficult to keep a movie identical to its musical counterpart. For people who aren't sure whether to see this movie or not, watch the musical.
CATS is an amazing adaption of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical and it's whole cast is just as exquisite and beautiful. My most favorite character was Grizabella the Glamour Cat, played by Jennifer Hudson which was a role she was born to play. The song Memory is also a very special song to me because it tells us that we still have the memories of the past when the sun shone bright and where we live our lives happily. I think that's a very important message that Webber was trying to say to us in musical form.
Cats movie functions more like an anthology of songs and musical theater numbers than it does as an intricate or compelling story. Thus, the material demands performers who can nail these tunes and dance numbers to a scratching post and hit you between the eyes with their singing chops. In that department, this version of Cats has been declawed. There are plenty of well-known actors, personalities and dancers in the roles, but true singers are few and far between.
This film is truely a masterpeice in unintentional horror. The effects are so special I'm going to have nightmares for weeks to come. Why they didn't just dress the actors in costumes and makeup I have no idea, either the filmmakers are lazy or someone wanted to push the boundries of visual effects. Cats pushes those effects right off a cliff into the uncanny valley. The design and look is freakin disgusting.I never saw the stage musical, so I didn't know what I was in for. This movie that has no plot, it's just a bunch of random cats introducing themselves. I tried to enjoy it as a so-bad-it's-good cringefest, but the lack of plot and the terrible effects make it impossible.
CATS has a stunning and groundbreaking choreography of almost every genre, awe-inspiring giant theatrical sets and possibly the best and most heart-rending performance of "Memories" that will ever be sung, (Jennifer Hudson), and an amazing new song (Taylor Swift) jointly written by Taylor Swift and Andrew Lloyd-Webber ... you have to see this. This is theatre and dance art of the highest quality its not blockbuster movie trash, and movie critics hate it .. which is yet another reason to go and see it. It is escapist, emotional and totally brilliant. A great movie for the whole family.
Cats the movie was a lot of fun and is incredibly experimental, but if you don't understand musicals than don't waste your time or money. The efforts put into this edgy film were there, with big musical names like Jason Derulo, Taylor Swift, and Jennifer Hudson showing an electrified, hip side to their artistry. Francesca Hayward being plucked from the Royal Ballet was a phenomenal choice, this energetic young woman sprung to life and added a needed bright spot of delicacy into the storyline, I was very pleased with her performance and her natural acting ability! Idris Elba also showed off why he's one of the top actors on the planet, I never expected him to fit into this film, but he does so with his over the top performance as the mischevious Macavity.
CATS movie is a masterpiece.A brilliant, thick soup, chock full of very developed and endearing characters, very appropriately scaled sets, and some of the best cgi this side of the nile. the songs were all unique and memorable, just like the people who sang them. it was heartwarming to see such accomplished and noble actors as dame judi dench, sir ian mckellan, and idris elba along with taylor swift, jennifer hudson, and jason derulo. a lot of people speculate that these pop stars were put in purely for publicity and singing talent, but their performances were incredible.
Utterly brilliant, and totally bonkers. It never loses it's theatricality, but can do so much more than any stage production could. Imaginative, brilliantly executed and very sexy. Idris Elba as a cat.The cast is excellent throughout, especially the dancers Francesca Hayward and Robbie Fairchild. I wasn't quite sure about Ian McKellan - would have preferred a better singer in that role - but that is a minor quibble, he is still very good as you would expect. Francesca Hayward gets to sing the new song which complements perfectly Jennifer Hudson's very raw rendition of Memory, which really means something here - much more than just a pretty tune. Taylor Swift is good too.The set is amazing. The CGI is amazing. The choreography is amazing.

The efforts put into this edgy film were there, with big musical names like Jason Derulo, Taylor Swift, and Jennifer Hudson showing an electrified, hip side to their artistry (Though we could have used more Taylor, she's the best artist in the world right now). With other actors/actresses Sir Ian, Judi, Rebel and James all adding moments ranging from bizarre, to sad, to raunchy, I felt the only thing that was off was the storyline, but what a shocker, IT'S A MUSICAL. For those of you who don't know, that's how true musical theater is or is made. Cats is a chaotic, fluster of sporadic emotion and song as seen from the perspective of CATS! And being a musical theater human who loves cats, I loved it.
This movie that has no plot, it's just a bunch of random cats introducing themselves. I tried to enjoy it as a so-bad-it's-good cringefest, but the lack of plot and the terrible effects make it impossible.Absolutely nothing including Judi Dench and Idris Elba didn't help this film from being a total piece of garbage. Almost every scene is unbearable and the ending result is one of the worst films of the decade.

Utterly brilliant, and totally bonkers. It never loses it's theatricality, but can do so much more than any stage production could. Imaginative, brilliantly executed and very sexy. Idris Elba as a cat, my god! The cast is excellent throughout, especially the dancers Francesca Hayward and Robbie Fairchild. Taylor Swift is good too. The set is amazing. The CGI is amazing. The choreography is amazing. The choreography is actually the real star, effortlessly blending ballet, tap, jazz and Busby Berkeley kitsch all dosed in a furry feline aesthetic. Absolutely breathtaking. One minute stunningly beautiful and poignant, the next totally ridiculous - tap-dancing mice and cockroaches. I said the CGI is amazing - I think it is. The twitching cat ears, the fur, and the tails, and not forgetting, presumably, much of the set. Reading other reviews it seems the cat CGI is what many people have had a problem with. I had no problem with it at all, and for me it helped keep the other-wordly theatre-y feel, which I liked. Most of the songs don't do much for me - fairly humdrum - but the production elements lift them up several notches, and combined with a most bizarre plot, it all adds up to a great slice of entertainment.
Director Tom Hooper made the movie with his due diligence but could not win the audience's mind. The story of the movie named Cats is dramatically beautiful but very weird. The songs are just brilliant. However, I was disappointed with the CGI. Choreography of the movie is good and convincing. In my opinion, 'Cats' is not too disappointing movie to watch. My rating: Plot - 3.5/5 Soundtrack - 4/5 Characters - 3.5/5 Directions - 3.5/5
