Boring, some poor sfx and the witch is totally unnecessary. Why didn't she just go to the emperor and kill him? I found the actress playing Mulan unconvincing. She was so tiny, how were we to believe she passed as a boy and fought the way she did? Disney should just stop with the remakes and try and make something new. Or is Hollywood terrified of this?

A 3-star is probably the best rating that I can give here. Yifei Liu is absolutely the ideal cast for the character of Mulan. It looks astonishing on that reflection of Mulan in the sword poster. And that wins the movie one of the stars. Some of the scenery in the movie are beautiful especially with IMAX 3D. Mountains and skyline of the capital city are breathtaking, which earns the second star. It is probably a half star if not with IMAX. As for the third, since IMDB won't allow me to give a ZERO star for the worst movie of all time, it is basically a buy-2-and-get-1-for-free star. Mulan's story has been told to all the Chinese of their childhood for over a thousand years. And thanks for Disney, the story is told to all the world with their great cartoon movie in 1998. The spirit of Mulan has been encouraging generations of people, including her bravery, loyalty and most importantly her filial responsibility. (Well, that's true, Chinese people thinks highly of their filial duty.) However, all the spirits above are but of words engraved on the sword, and the director really wants to tell that little story about a girl seeking for her true-self, which could be any other story but Mulan's. Despite of that, the whole story line is not logical, well, at all. * Avoiding to face the true-self as a female? Is that true? * Hiding family Kungfu from the troop? Is that necessary? * Taking off all armor and helmet to run for a war fight? Cannot be more logical. * A troop of well trained soldiers counting the Emperor's life on and only on a little girl? Best strategy ever. * Such an easily provoked Emperor that would rather get himself into a one on one fight to a berserker? Trump wouldn't do that for sure. If you want to make a good Chinese history based movie, the least thing you have to do is to do some real study on it. But all I can see from this movie is prejudice from westerners to Chinese traditional culture and a soulless Disney drama. * Praying to phoenix for safety and peace? We don't ever do that in China. * Concubines with pale white faces and bloody red cheek makeups? That's what Japanese Geishas do. * A mind-controlling or transforming witch? Okay, Valar Morghulis. * Phoenix Vs Eagle metaphor? What's that for? Basically, not a single culture is presented precisely from where they come in this movie. If you can read Chinese, you can learn more mistakes that are made about the culture, history timelines, etc, where the ratings goes all the way down to 4.9 after 3 days of the release. If you can't, don't bother, and just remember the mistakes are much more than you can even imagine. The director successfully made a contribution to alienate the understanding between the westerners and Chinese. Westerners may think this another movie that is made for Chinese in order to please the Chinese market, while Chinese people are actually feeling INSULTED by all these cultural bias. Niki Caro shows us a great example how to make a movie and offend both side of the audience. In the original Mulan folklore, there are no characters like Mushu, the cricket, and all the funny souls of ancestors. But who would possibly complain about a cute funny dragon especially when it comes from Disney? But when a silent, helpless and do-not-know-what-to-do phoenix is taking Mushu's place, it just let people doubt if this 2020 remake is actually a Disney movie. Besides, Mulan is made a superhero with great talent when she was very young. And of course, a heroine cannot have a boyfriend, potential one, as a general or something. That adaption sounds not feminist at all. All in all, this movie is simply a waste of a good legend, passion from Disney fans, 2 hours of your life probably, and above all, 200 million dollars. Good job Niki Caro!

I haven't seen the animated version, just bits and pieces. I went in with little expectation other than knowing certain characters will be omitted and assumed it's for a seamless live action conversion. My sister had just watched it before I did and did not like it "one bit" in her words. I walked away thoroughly entertained and for some reason had the 'feels'. Strong powerful message to empower young girls, women, fathers with a story centred on family, trust, loyalty and devotion, choosing the right for the right moment, I'd hazard to say it's it's an inspiring piece. There are some improvements I would critique such as the younger Mulan could have had a slight accent, and the villain 'Bori Khan' could have had more depth, but with such a mammoth story condensed into a Disney standard run time, there can only be an attempt of balance in character building and events that unfold in that timeline. Overall, I'm glad my opinion differs from my sister. What a great movie! (For the record, I'm a male, ex-serviceman veteran and current firefighter and I'm thankful for powerful stories like this to uplift and encourage young/women to stand tall and be 'true') Good job Disney, well done.

Disney's Mulan (2020) is even better than Mulan (1998). It is a must watch. It is entertaining, with breathtaking scenes, stunning fightings, and most important of all it flashes out the human elements of family relationships, comradeship, female empowerment and integrity. While it is not intended to be as light-hearted and humorous as Mulan (1998), there are still speckles of comedic moments. Mulan (1998) is a clumsy girl who needed guidance from a small talking dragon while Mulan (2020) is a girl who needs to find her own path walking among the patriarchal society and is mainly guided by her own heart as well as something else (I shall not add spoiler). Kids will love this movie for its actions and adults will be re-inspired by this young girl, Mulan whose remarkable story has been told and retold generations after generations for centuries.

A soon as you let go of the fact that this version is NOT going to be exactly like the 1998 animated film, you’ll appreciate it for what it is: Heartwarming and action-packed while effectively delivering the messages of female empowerment and being true to yourself. Plus, an ALL-ASIAN cast!! This is one of the rare times I’ve agreed with the critics. I didn’t realize how good the live-action version was until the second time I watched it as a completely stand-alone film and could appreciate the necessity of some storyline changes (e.g. how Mulan chooses to reveal herself). In fact, my whole family enjoyed it very much despite expecting it to be terrible based on reviews. If you’re adamant on watching a shot-for-shot of the animated version complete with catchy songs and a talking dragon, you probably won’t like this version. If you have an open mind and genuinely enjoy entertaining films with beautiful cinematography and a talented cast, you’ll probably like it. You’ll appreciate it even more when you notice the little tidbits they’ve incorporated from the animated version. The absence of singing and cutesy sidekicks actually allows the film’s message to be taken more seriously.

This gorgeous movie is the classic remake of the Disney cartoon version of "Mulan" 22 years ago. The timeless oriental values of valour, loyalty and truthfulness were the central themes of the story. The 3 words, incribed on the Hua's family sword, were oft repeated in the tone and character of the movie. Mulan offered herself to take her father's place to fight against the nothern invaders as the emperior decreed that every male from a family has to be conscripted into the imperial army. It was an act of fiilial piety and sacrifice for her father and family, a virtue that is steeped in eastern culture. I like the opening scene where, as a young adventurous girl, she chased a chicken zealously, from scaling the roof tiles and doing aerial sommersaults just to ensure that the chicken went into the coop, though her father tried in vain to stop her from going through such unbecoming stunts as it is natural for the chicken to run back to its coop. Her bold adventurism did not earn the nods of approval from her neighbours but her father was secretly proud of her bravery.

Powerful performances and intense battle sequences make this retelling of Mulan a more mature adaptation, stressing the story's themes of female empowerment and family devotion. Although New Zealander director Niki Caro isn't of Chinese descent, she's spent much of her career focusing on women's stories (Whale Rider, Zookeeper's Wife, North Country), so Mulan fits in with her filmography of strong female characters overcoming seemingly insurmountable obstacles.

This film is a winner with epic action and tantalizing drama.. amazing direction by Niki Caro The action and martial arts fight sequences are very well done. Disney's live-action adaptation of Mulan has earned a PG-13 rating. This would make Mulan the first of Disney's live-action films - based off of animated classics - to earn above a PG rating. This brings in the needed drama and action ramping up the intensity and grit to really make this film shine. I thoroughly enjoyed this epic-scale story about the power of being yourself in a world not ready to accept that, a tale that will likely always have resonance.

Characters are inconsistent, and often times stupid- as the soldiers of the sixth regiment huddle together on the night before their first encounter with the northern tribes, a courageous Mulan reassures her "comrades" that she will have their back. Cut to the battle scene, this lady without thinking twice literally leaves her "comrades" to face the hordes of tribesmen charging toward them in pursuit of 10 randos "on-the-run". Not to mention also going on a suicide mission after all of the other imperial soldiers in pursuit died. She will later go so far as to demonstrate that when you believe in your-self you don't need armour or a scrunchie instead you'll just shimmy on over and use that incredible chi you've been given. In relentless pursuit of destroying childhood memories, 2020's Mulan will throw in a bonus character "birdwoman" the lady who has all the power of a formidable Disney villain (think Maleficent) but the brain of … a bird who at a critical moment in the film decides to not stop the villain (Bori Khan) by smacking him with her wind powers or turning into a flock of birds to distract his shot aimed at Mulan but instead will transform into a bird, fly faster than a loosed arrow and save Mulan by intercepting the arrow with her bird body (think flappy bird) just after having two conversations with her on what it means to be a scorned woman. ("Ok, Disney").

At the center is the lovely Yifei Liu, whos called upon to show a great deal of range as Mulan transforms herself from brazen, impetuous rebel to mature, commanding leader. Just as important is the fact that she finds her voice over the course of this journey a phenomenon specific to this character and this story, but one that couldn’t be more resonant for women of all ages watching all over the world, right now. Liu’s performance might have been more powerful if she’d been a bit more emotive, but the steeliness and physicality she displays make her a convincing fighter.Caro is a perfect choice to helm this live-action “Mulan,” having made her name nearly two decades ago with another story of a determined girl who dared to buck the patriarchy, 2002 “Whale Rider.” Working from a script by Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver and Elizabeth Martin & Lauren Hynek, Caro interweaves the story’s ancient poetic roots with Easter eggs from the 1998 animated film.

This film is a winner with epic action and tantalizing drama . A young Chinese maiden disguises herself as a male warrior in order to save her father. The cinematography is absolutely gorgeous .Filming taking place in New Zealand and China. With a production budget of $200 million, it is the most expensive film ever made by a female director. Director: Niki Caro Writers: Rick Jaffa (screenplay by), Amanda Silver Stars: Yifei Liu, Donnie Yen, Li Gong, Jet Li Amazing set pieces. Every frame is like a work of art , stunning to look at . The film score is top notch . This film is not a musical and that decision to remake Mulan (2020) as a historical action drama really pays off in the end .Bringing the audience a fresh and new cinematic experience differentiating this fresh story from the charming Mulan (1998) American animated musical original. The action and martial arts fight sequences are very well done. Yifei Liu as the live action Mulan I read did 90% of her own stunt work . She rides horseback , wields a sword (Single-handed jian and scabbard of the 18th–19th century.) very convincingly. These are the type of skills the casting director were looking for specifically when they interviewed over a thousand candidates for the role of Mulan. Yifei Liu is perfection in her role. Her acting is some what "stoic" which in my opinion represent the Chinese culture perfectly. Yifei Liu was tremendous bringing the legend of Mulan to life . Malang begins with a solid punch where a hunky Advait (Aditya Roy Kapur) knocks off several of his fellow prisoners in a jail in Goa. After being released as a free man, he dials up the number of a cop named Anjaney Agashe (Anil Kapoor) and informs him that he's about to go on a killing spree. One after another, cops are bumped off in a brutal manner. Anjaney along with crime branch officer Michael Rodriguez (Kunal Kemmu) begin a hunt for Advait. Meanwhile through flashbacks, we are introduced to Advait's backstory which holds the key to the killing spree. Five years ago, he was backpack tripper who bumps into a free-spirited girl Sara (Disha Patani) at a rave party on Goa. Post a one-night stand, the duo begin to bond over adventure sports, drugs and other thrills and make a pact to make most of their time together. However, their adventurous life soon crashes with a thud when they fall victim to an unfortunate incident. As the plot unravels further, a murky dark past threatens to unleash the madness in all the four characters.

My wife and I love the Disney animated version as do our girls (5 & 7). We wanted to see if it was appropriate for them and, it really depends on their maturity level. The story is more or less the same as the animated version. However, there is one particular scene when the Imperial Army goes to find the enemy that we determined may be scary for our 5 year old.

2020 was a year full of difficult moments, none of these painful moments, however were as agonizing as the 90-minutes that one has to endure to get to the roll of credits of this sad-sad reboot of what otherwise would have been remembered as a Disney all-time favourite. For the uninitiated - spoilers ahead! Uninspiring character development - one of the things that I liked best watching Disney's 1998 animated film-Mulan was the fact that it highlighted the internal conflict common faced by many asians that are forced to conform within high-context cultures that would otherwise be dismissive of your own identity or brand. The Mulan that was put forth in 1998, wasn't the strongest but she worked with what she had and got help from her friends (an average jane that got by). Fast forward to 22 years later and we have wonder-woman Hua Mulan who's drank all the kool-aid giving her "unmatched chi" (see high midichlorian count - Star War) and the innate ability to bicycle kick an arrow shot-caught-and then thrown into the air by a bound emperor to kill a man who should have died when he fell from what seemed like 50 feet to the ground (let's not forget that this guy then gets up and shoots an arrow to a bound emperor only to have that arrow caught, thrown in the air and then bicycle kicked back into his chest - have I mentioned the bicycle kick?) ; TLDR : Who needs character development when you've got the "Chi"

It was a great movie and we both enjoyed it over the animated version. Only hints of affection and nothing gratuitous. No language issues at all. Blood is used very sparingly in maybe one or two scenes. I think a good average age to see this version is around 10, as they will have the ability to fully understand what is going on and why.

Some elements are not as strong as the others, Jason Scott Lee’s Hun villain is a little cartoonish, some of the jokes are rather ho-hum, and there’s an inherently contradictory element central to its thoughts on feminine liberation and self-given permission, while ultimately still trying to find acceptance in the patriarchy of the military and her family. Still, “Mulan” resonates, nonetheless with skill, finesse, and moving poignancy. Full of vigor and full-feeling, Caro’s picture is a true battle epic and easily one of Disney’s best live-action adaptations of their own animated catalog that unquestionably justifies its existence. An epic coming of age journey with scale and spectacle, and rousing heart, “Mulan,” is a triumph and essentially boils down to a wholehearted tale of feminine resolve, proving the boys wrong and making a father proud while being true to one’s self. That sounds a little simplistic, but Caro’s movie has surprising layers, of color, contour, and shade to shape her magnificent new empowering fairy tale

Good movie to watch! Based on traditional Chinese legend, Mulan sees the eponymous teen rebel, unable to fulfil servile wifely duties , attempt to save familial blushes by dressing as a man and becoming a war hero in the battle against the Hun.Ancient China is beautifully evoked and the film throws up compelling dramatic beats - the opening attack on the Great Wall Of China, Mulan donning her father's armour, the final showdown - that linger long in the memory. Best of all, though, is a Hun stampede down the slopes of a snowy mountain, fantastically energised by swooping camera work, that rivals the great David Lean in its exhilarating, epic sweep.

Mulan (2020) is probably one of the most awaited movie of the year, and due to the covid19 global outbreak for most of this year, perhaps even of all time; spanning more than a quarter of century from its "original" animated, (some dare to say) musical, highly acclaimed, and loved by many (including me) version. In fact, the animated Mulan was my most fave movie of Disney, and I even love to sing its OST " Reflection" in karaoke room over and over again.

Her bold adventurism did not earn the nods of approval from her neighbor's but her father was secretly proud of her bravery. That scene is very telling about the societal norms during that era, where girls have to behave like dainty and demure ladies who need to know their place in a male dominated society. What was interesting was that Mulan has a lot of "qi" or inner strength, probably acquired from years of martial arts training since she was a kid. She hid her "qi" from her male comrades in the army camp but accidentally revealed her fighting prowess during a sparring match with a fellow soldier. Her status as a skilled and fearless warrior was further cemented after she saved her regiment from being fire bombed by distracting the enemy and causing them to launch a fireball onto the snow mountain which triggered an avalanche. There were some creative elements in the plot where the evil scorceress played by the versatile Gong Li, was able to morph into different identities to plot the capture of the the emperor, played by Jet Li who looked like he has aged quite a lot????. Then, there was the charismatic commander played by Donnie Yen, who did not disappoint his fans with his taj chi and sword fighting skills. Though the veteran actors played their roles to the hilt, I was most impressed with Tzi Ma, who played the father of Mulan, Fa Zhou. He had a lot of inner emotions in his acting, really an under-rated actor

this film is best for the visuals and arts. and we also want that. Mulan,” however, while not totally original, transitions to live action with real guts and reinvention. Yes, I missed the 1998 animated film’s catchy music and talking animals — Eddie Murphy as a joking dragon called Mushu might be tough to swing in 2020 — but I was swept away by the breathtaking Chinese backdrops and high-stakes battles.

Some elements are not as strong as the others, Jason Scott Lee's Hun villain is a little cartoonish, some of the jokes are rather ho - hum, and there's an inherently contradictory element central to its thoughts on feminine liberation and self - given permission, while ultimately still trying to find acceptance in the patriarchy of the military and her family. Still, "Mulan" resonates, nonetheless with skill, finesse, and moving poignancy, Full of vigor and full - feeling, Caro's picture is a true battle epic and easily one of Disney's best live - action adaptations of their own animated catalog that unquestionably justifies its existence. An epic coming of age journey with scale and spectacle, and rousing heart, "Mulan" is a triumph and essentially boils down to a wholehearted tale of feminine resolve, proving the boys wrong and making a father proud while being true to one's self. That sounds a little simplistic, but Caro's movie has surprising layers of color, contour, and shade to shape her magnificent new empowering fairy tale.

After months of waiting for this remake to release I have no words to explain how outstanding it was. Trust me when I say I’ve watched about three times already! It helped me fully understand Mulans story and true identity. I grew up watching the 1998 film and was disappointed when many of the original characters were not included in the 2020 making. But it was still such a vibrant and amazing movie without them. I was very impressed by the actors performances, especially Lui Yi Fei. She helped make this film special by really embracing her character and doing about 90% of her stunts. And who doesn’t love watching Chinese legends like Donnie Yen and Jet Li? A definite big thanks to everyone who was involved in the making of Mulan. I’ll definitely be watching this film many more times.

Its truly something to see all the people giving this remake 5 stars...its somewhat hard to believe they have even watched the movie. Everything that made the original Mulan great was left out and replaced with what is apparently the last Jedi from the star wars movies. There little to no character growth, plot is flimsy at best, the plot doesn't actually develop in a fun way (or any way at all; you rely on a witch with no real role but to give causation to special effects to tell you what is going on and what needs to happen next), there are gaping plot holes and the only thing that is "Mulan" about this movie is that they took the premise that a woman dresses up as a man for a few minutes and then decides to save the Emperor of China. Everything else is completely different and very poorly done.

Powerful performances and intense battling sequences make this movie a more mature adaptation stressing the story's theme of female empowerment and family devotion. My wife and I loved the Disney animated version. As do our girls we wanted to see if it was appropriate for them and it really depends on there maturity level. Really enjoyed watching it !

Traditionally Chinese people only agree that having sons means the family continues existing, but having just daughters means the family ends in that generation. That is the difference between the value of daughters and sons in ancient China. Mulan’s father says “I’m blessed with two daughters.” He is against the traditional belief because he loves his family and thinks his daughters are no less valuable than sons. It is just the same as what Mulan does, which is loving family so much and would be against the public views to protect family.

This movie failed to show the development and progress of Mulan into the empowered character that she was in the original movie. Mulan was no fighter, but due to a spontaneous decision, she had to make herself as one. And in the first movie, we saw how she started off as really weak and incompetent into someone strong and capable. Seeing this, she was more like already built "strong" and they were shoving it in your face that she was the chosen one - and were just waiting to get on with it in the final battle where she defeats the bad guy. The scene where she finally defeats the boss was less impactful than the the first movie as well. And that's not the only thing that is problematic with this one.

Genuinely enjoyed watching this so much! Everyone involved did a wonderful job, and this new take on the story is captivating. Yes it is different to the animated version, but in such a way you can love both as separate films based on the same story. I loved the original Disney film as a child and now I get to love this new version too. Was a bit skeptical when it was announced that the live action would be quite different but the approach they took in my opinion adds a greater level of respect and dignity to the story of Mulan. Definitely my favorite Disney Remake thus far, so much so I might almost hope they take the time to do a second film, I'd love to see more of this new Mulan world they've created. And well done to the whole cast, they played their characters well and carried the heart of the story through the screen.

Terrible story telling. and it's NOT because it's not the original animation version. The story is not at all convincing how the other characters transform from untrusted of women in battlefield, furious at her lying and betrayal to trusting her completely without any foreshadowing. People won't be turning their back on someone in the first min to trusting and letting them lead on the next one just because she went there to provide the inside information. This is not how human mind works. The animation is well liked because it works as a story, and this film failed because the story failed, not because it's not the animation version. This movie tries to focus on the mental aspect of a woman fighting to create a space where it wasn't allowed, however how the situation transformed to her advantage is the weakest of all. The stars are for the fighting scene and costume.

Mulan is a visual fest, and nothing more. It's a bland, lifeless mess of a film with watered down stakes, poor characters, no humour, and no heart. If anything, it's showing just how masterful the 1998 animation is. Mulan was just an ordinary girl, who went on to do extraordinary things, burdened by societal constrictions and driven by love, loyalty and honour. But this version of Mulan is wooden and hollow. There is no weight to her decisions, no urgency because she is the chosen one. And although Disney has proclaimed this to be an empowering film for women, applying the 'chosen one' archetype to the female lead is a funny way if promoting female empowerment . If anything, it's disparaging, disheartening and huge step back compared to it's predecessor.

Mulan is a decidedly Disneyfied take on a Chinese fairy tale, elements of Chinese culture and history ring true. It also offers kids a strong female character who (like Moana and Merida) stands out from the Disney Princess pack and offers a positive gender representation for young viewers (even though gender-related stereotypes are also sometimes played for laughs). Expect some scary/intense battle scenes, weapons use, explosions, sad moments, and a very menacing bad guy. The Huns destroy Chinese villages and kill people. There's a bit of flirting/romantic tension. While Mulan ultimately becomes a hero and helps her people, she does so by rebelling against authority, which is worth discussing. But in the end, this is a story about perseverance, teamwork, and courage that's bound to choke up dads and daughters everywhere.

Disney as always has a certain aura to its movies, however this is completely different from those, no singing is one of those which states studio has is moving away from its own prescribed formats long enough. It's about a girl who is courageous to take place of ailing father to fight battle for her country disguised as a man, it's a complete journey of her transformation from a girl to a women embracing her inner self and realising her destiny. Breath taking visuals and fight scenes are superb however sometimes gives an impression of super hero which Mulan is'nt. Honestly this movie is aptly for large screen than to be viewed at home. All in all not perfect in every way but throughly enjoyed watching it.

No matter how big the banner of Disney is behind the movie named Mulan, it is unable to win the hearts of the viewers. The story is about a Chinese warrior. The story of defending China from invaders has been told. Dragon, fantasy, visual effects, magic, special effects - a lot of things are scattered in this movie. But the story of the sinking of the boat has come many times before. Directed by: Niki Caro Rating: PG 13 Duration: 1 hour 55 mins Genre: Action, Adventure, Drama Release Date: 04/09/2020 Cast: Yifei Liu, Donnie Yen, Li Gong & many more My Verdict: Plot - 2/5 Soundtrack - 2/5 Characters - 2/5 Directions - 2/5

I enjoyed watching this remake and appreciate the choices made to make it stand apart from the animated. Not that it needs to be said, but the live-action remakes will just never surpass the greatness of the originals, and that's still true here. Nevertheless, a visually stunning film that was enjoyable to watch.

How much I was excited after just watching the trailer came to live after watching the movie . It's all filed all the hilarious exciting things and the intense fight how we could just forget it. The movie Mulan released from Disney is the story about a girl who defies all odds and train herself to fight against the invaders . She saves all people and stand together with her father in the fight that what filled me with a lot of inspiration. The story of the movie is quite good and what is best is cinematography and the way it is displayed infront of the viewers. Plot is real good . Do have a look at the movie and surprise yourself by getting lost in Disney World .

Watching Disney movies while growing up is an out of the world feeling. Movie Mulan is based on the life of a girl ,I would rather say a warrior who defies the odds and fight standing with her father against the invaders of China to save her family and her group . The movie includes a great story ,plotting is also good. I have always been excited by effects used in the Disney movies ,it's just awesome. She learns skills of the war and fight to save her people. The fight only becomes intresting when the opposing also have a great power and this is shown in this movie. The sword is very dynamic, fast and exact .
