A complete damp squib, Dark Phoenix feels like a cheap TV series finale for a cancelled show, not the culmination of a twenty year film franchise. It is probably the second worst X-Men film (because *shudders* Origins: Wolverine still exists) and somehow can't even match The Last Stand in terms of quality. It may be a more faithful adaptation of The Dark Phoenix Saga but it's much more dull and doesn't have interesting embellishments to help it past its worst moments. The film clocks in at under two hours, which seems strange when the previous three films all surpassed 130 minutes. It becomes clear why the film is so stripped back though, as the film is edited to the bone, with no breathing room for character development or anything that doesn't move the plot forward. The first half is awful, trying way too hard to make the emotional scenes land by playing them as overwrought yet obvious, accompanied by a whiny score. The film settles into a groove later on, especially in a decent train-set action sequence, but it takes far too long to get interesting, especially as it ultimately contains some of the most generic alien villains in superhero cinema. The actors in Dark Phoenix clearly don't want to be there, with most barely trying. Jennifer Lawrence is particularly subpar, but really most of the cast seem to not care. In the first confrontation between James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender, their accents inexplicably change. Whether through laziness or reshoots the actors appear to be phoning it in. Only Tye Sheridan appears to be committed and he easily gives the best performance.
