I wonder if I saw the same movie as the rest of the reviewers. The story made no sense. This is one of the biggest concerns when making a movie which involves time travel. Most writers are not upto the task to tell a compelling story which makes sense inside the world they have created. Time travel is a crutch used by writers when they have painted themselves into a corner. Aside from that, the biggest turning point of the movie was black widow's arc with the boring Hawkeye. The sacrifice made zero sense. Hawkeye had nothing left after the death of his family. That's why the movie led us to believe that he became an assassin. But then to go and give him and Black Widow a platonic love connection was horrible. Black Widow likes Bruce Banner more. Their arc would have made more sense and Hawkeye couple have met the woman with the Time Stone and absolutely nothing would have changed storywise, while also filling up a loophole. Thor's arc was heartbreaking though. Iron Man had a satisfying conclusion. Captain America's aging made no sense when Bucky still looks like he hasn't aged a bit. The movie is a one time watch and nowhere near to the greatness of Infinity War.
Disney realized that DCEU/Warner Bros was taking all the goodwill of the audience and tons of money by making the first ever real superhero movie with a female lead in the brilliant Wonder Woman. So, ofc they had to step into the game too and create something with a female superhero. And so we have a drab and dull Captain Marvel set in the 90s thereby making sure that her story had nothing significant to add to the overall Infinity Saga. Brie Larson is fine as are all the other actors (even the cgi enhanced ones), but there is no compelling story behind it. We, the audience, know everything before Captain Marvel does and that is a major issue with the movie. It's not fun or interesting either. Let's just hope that Disney doesn't botch up her character further in Endgame.
Shazam covers all the bases and hits a few balls out of the boundary. But it isn't without a few faults. The goofy adult version of Billy Batson is a tonal mismatch to the serious and troubled kid Billy. It is a good family film though and the laughs keep coming along with a few heartbreaking scenes. It has enough darkness as well. Wonder Woman, Aquaman and now Shazam, DCEU has finally arrived folks. Go and watch this movie.
